We have added two Art on the Trail, or en plein air, events. En plein air is defined in Wikipedia as a French expression which means “in the open air” and is particularly used to describe the act of painting outdoors. We have extended it to also include drawing and sketching.
Our first event will be on June 25 with Charlie Waters, an artist and teacher from Canaan Valley, WV. Charlie will be leading a workshop on keeping a sketchbook while hiking. The emphasis will be on the pleasure of observing nature, big and small, and recording it in a journal which, hopefully, will become as essential to your hikes as your hiking shoes and sunscreen. The cost includes a sketchbook, pencils, charcoals and lunch.
The second Art on the Trail workshop will be with Carolyn Light, a Clarksburg, WV, artist, on July 23. This event will explore watercolor painting in nature at Canaan Valley State Park. Carolyn is a well known West Virginia watercolor painter and teacher. Participants will be sent a list of supplies that they will need. Lunch is included in the cost of the workshop.
All Art on the Trail events must have a minimum of 5 participants and they are limited to a maximum of 12 participants, so sign up early!!

These walks are along level, smooth trails that have a wide and well compacted surface. All walks require proper footwear, but an easy walk can be done in sturdy athletic shoes.
An intermediate walk is on dirt trails with generally well compacted surfaces but with the occasional rocky and uneven surface to negotiate. The intermediate trails will take us up and over hills and now and again across a creek. A sturdy walking shoe or boot is needed.
A difficult trail is rocky and uneven for much of its length. There are often steep sections which may require you to use your hands and there is almost always a water crossing on a difficult trail. Heavy walking shoes or boots are needed on these trails and sometimes sandals are needed to cross a creek. Walking sticks are a good option.
